A Note on Pitch Raises
What is it? Pitch Raise is the industry standard label used when the pitch of a piano is at least 10% higher or lower than the norm. Most frequently, in our area, the pitch drops significantly.
When is it needed? When a piano hasn't been tuned for over a year or more, or has been exposed to changes in humidity and temperature, the soundboard will swell and/or shrink changing the tension of the strings. This results in a change in pitch (higher or lower). The need for a pitch raise can be predicted, but only verified on site. Over time the overall pitch can lower dramatically.
How is it corrected? Two tunings must be done in the same session. The first tuning moves the pitch close to the norm. The second tuning stabilizes and fine tunes the piano. It is also recommended that the piano be retuned again in six months to help stabilize the tuning. The metal frame of a piano is under thousands of pounds of pressure from the tension of over 200 strings and large adjustments take time to fully settle in.
